Our
workshops
These workshops are
opened to anyone interested
on Gospel music,
who would like to learn to sing
and, above all,
who feels the need or simply would like
to express his/her feelings by the means of this music.
To sing Gospel, like most of the afro-american musics, is more important
to have something to transmit, a feeling to express, rather than
have a great technique (of course, if you have both things, much
better!). At the same time
you don’t necessarily need
to be religious: we propose sessions in which each one
experience the spirituality on his own way, without giving to it
any name or label. So, it isn’t necessary any kind of training,
knowledge or religion to enrol in any of our workshops. The only
thing
really necessary is to feel like learning, like singing
and feel the need to express your feelings singing Gospel.
This initiation Gospel workshops are usually structured in
2
sessions of 4 hours if the workshop is being celebrated
in 2 consecutive days or in
2 sessions of 3 hours
if those are being celebrated the same day.
The work is
in groups that, most of the times,
are formed by people from different origins and musical levels.
The workshop is based in a
repertoire that the
professor draws up specially for every occasion. Frequently the
workshop starts with the professor asking to each one of the assistants
to introduce themselves, and that each one explains briefly his/her
relationship with music and what lead him/her to enrol to the Gospel
workshop. After that the professor proceeds to make the assistants
warm up their voices by some vocal exercises, both for the vocal
cords and for all the muscles involved, that means mouth, neck,
etc…
At that point, the assistants are divided in
subgroups according
their tessitura and then the work starts. The professor
works with all assistants as in a choir but also with each vocalist
as a soloist, trying to cause improvisation as the main source of
expression.
Meanwhile, the professor gives a general vision of the social and
historical context in which Gospel was born and developed so everyone
can understand all what concerns this type of music.
We don’t give
musical scores because Taller
de Gospel advocates that anyone, without any difference of knowledges,
can assist to a Gospel workshop. There’s also another reason
for which the musical scores are not being given, and it is because
the professor could change some of the voices of each tune depending
on the needs and the characteristics of each group, the number of
members in each chord, etc…
