Gospel workshops with Emmanuel Djob

The professor Emmanuel Djob gives a theoretical-practical lessons about afro American spiritual music, starting from the Negro Spirituals and the Work Songs till the Traditional Gospel and the contemporary Gospel.

He inserts some explanations about the social and historical context that lead to the creation of that musical style between the songs of the repertoire.

Rhythm is specially important in Emmanuel Djob’s lessons, not in vain the afro American musics are full of rhythm: the corporal expression is considered very important. There’s also an important part dedicated to the soloists and the Gospel vocal techniques.

Emotion: perhaps the most important part in Emmanuel Djob’s lessons, which it’s aim is to make each one lose it’s own inhibitions. The atmosphere created in the Gospel workshops invites everyone to forget about our repressions and to appear without barriers nor masks, being ourselves, and getting the best of each other when singing.

Gospel workshops with Didier Likeng

Didier Likeng proposes a theoretical and practical learning of Gospel and Negro Spirituals. He incites to each assistant to go beyond his/her own vocal practices and to experience Gospel intensively till the most profound of his/her being. For Didier the Gospel is more than music, is an attitude in front of life.

Didier proposes many subjects to work on in Gospel:

Negro Spirituals
African Gospel
Traditional Gospel
Modern Gospel
Hard Gospel
Contemporary Gospel
Songs of praise

After the compulsory vocal warm up, the Gospel Workshop starts with an exposition about the Negro Spirituals and Gospel since the slavery abolition. Subsequently to the classification of the assistants into their different vocal tessitures, Didier invites each one of them to profound in his/her voice through Gospel to:

- make each one feel the emotions that emerge from his/her body.
- try to make each assistant sing as a slave would, expressing his/her suffering.
- make each assistant go beyond his/her regular vocal practices.
- make the song become the language through which all the emotions are transmitted.
- to make take the pleasure for singing to everyone who had never sang before and make him/her lose his/her inhibitions.

The main objective is that each one finds it’s own voice, the voice that emanates from the most profound of each being, more than finding the perfect tuning it’s about finding the voice that each one of us have inside and that a very few people know how to make it come out, and that will provide an essential wellbeing.
